» Commando FAQ
Here's where I try to answer some questions that I see people asking all the time with regard to the commandos.
Will there be another Republic Commando game?
Nothing has been announced. The possibility is there, of course. However, I personally don't think it's likely, at least in the next few years. Lucasarts has lots of other projects going on at the moment. But if it's to be, it'll be announced at
StarWars.com and/or
Lucasarts first.
Will there be more Republic Commando novels?
Yes! There will be four novels in the Republic Commando series. The third book,
True Colors, is out now and the series will end with a hardcover entitled
Order 66, coming to bookstores near you in September 2008.
What are Republic Commandos? Are they like ARC Troopers?
Republic Commandos are not ARC Troopers, no. ARCs (Advanced Recon Commandos) were trained personally by Jango Fett for the most critical missions. They have no genetic tampering, aside from growth acceleration, and thus do not have the modifications that regular clone troopers do to make them better team-players than Jango was. The ARCs were used sparingly during the Clone Wars due to their limited number (a few hundred, as opposed to thousands of commandos) and the fact that they proved to be quite unpredictable. Republic Commandos, on the other hand, are genetically identical to regular clone troopers, but have received extra training. From the beginning, they were trained separately from the other clones, were organized into squads of four commandos, and were instructed by Mandalorian mercenaries hired by Jango for that purpose. As a result of these environmental differences, the commandos often developed more distinct personalities than the rank-and-file clones, yet were considered less unpredictable than the ARCs.
In Republic Commando: Hard Contact, Niner mentions his old squadmate whose name is Sev. Is this the same Sev from the Republic Commando game?
No, they are two separate characters - most notibly because Niner's Sev died at Geonosis and Delta Squad's Sev did not. Since there are thousands of commandos, it's not hard to imagine that nicknames based on numbers would be quite common. Thus it's likely that there are many commandos called "Sev", "Niner", etc.
Are the commandos capable of resisting Order 66?
It seems to be a widespread belief that Order 66, as shown in the Revenge of the Sith movie, was somehow subconsciously implanted into the clones, like brainwashing. Upon receiving the order, they stopping what they were doing and, unthinking and with no choice in the matter, killed their Jedi Generals and Commanders. It has been confirmed in several places that this is not the case. Order 66 was a contingency plan, just one in a long list of actions to take should an event occur. In this case, the event was the betrayal by the Jedi. Ultimately, the clones are not loyal to the Jedi - they're loyal to the Republic. The leader of the Republic's Grand Army - by Revenge of the Sith, that's Supreme Chancellor Palpatine - told the clones that the Jedi have betrayed the Republic, and the clones behave exactly as they were trained to, and killed them. Obedience to authority figures is an extremely powerful force, and even moreso in soldiers who have been raised from day one to follow orders without question. And it was a perfectly legal order. Will there be clones who refuse to comply with the order? Yes, of course. I imagine that there will be clones from all walks (clone troopers, commandos, ARC troopers) who resisted the order, and even more who complied at the time but felt guilty or confused afterwards. Yet they're probably few and far between.
Short answer: Yes, all clones are capable of resisting Order 66. The majority will not choose to, but some will (and have, if you've read the Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader novel).
Would Darman kill Etain if given Order 66?
The events of Order 66 on our favourite commandos will presumably be covered in the upcoming book
Order 66. As for details of Darman and Etain's whereabouts and situation? We'll have to wait and see.
What happens to Sev at the end of the Republic Commando game?
We don't know for sure; he is attacked and the rest of his squad has to leave him behind and get out. However, it has been confirmed that his status is Missing-In-Action, not Killed-In-Action, so it's possible that he'll appear again down the road. Knowing Sev, I don't think he'd go down to a couple droids, bugs, and trandos!
Note: Several of you have written to me about
Mort, a former clone commando from the
Star Wars Galaxies game who has a similar backstory to Sev's, wondering if they might be the same character. While it's interesting to speculate, there's no way to know for sure until it's officially confirmed one way or the other. And there's also
Able-1707: same deal with him. No way to know for sure. I personally think that neither of them are Sev, and Sev's full story just hasn't been revealed yet. We just have to be patient!
I noticed that both Boss in the Republic Commando game and Commander Bacara in Episode III are number 1138. Are they the same?
No. Commander Bacara is a Clone Commander and thus has designation CC-1138. Boss is a Republic Commando whose number is RC-1138. They are completely separate characters who just happen to share a number.
